Reviewing Fire Safety this Spring

If you’re like manyReviewing Fire Safety this Spring Americans who take the spring season as a chance to do some seriously cleaning around the house, then there’s one other thing you should add to your to-do list: reviewing fire safety in your home.

To work a fire safety checkup into your spring cleaning routine, start with a once-over of all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors; have you changed the batteries yet this year?

If not, change them now. Check the expiration dates on your fire extinguishers, and make sure you have a grease fire extinguisher somewhere in your kitchen near the stove.

Check your sprinkler system to see if it requires any maintenance. Swap out any damaged extension cords, make sure any combustible chemicals are stored safely (this includes paint and cleaning supplies), and run a few fire drills with your family. Establish a meeting point across the street away from your home where everyone will go to in the event of a fire.

There’s no doubt that we’re all ready to get outside and start enjoying some nicer weather. If you like to have barbecues in your backyard, there are a few things you need to do this spring before you can have everyone over for burgers and hot dogs.

Captain William Powers says in the Wicked Local, start by removing any debris and build up from your grill. Check for gas leaks by applying a mixture of water and dish soap to the rubber hoses and connections, and look for bubbles. Remember that if you smell gas while you grill, it could mean that the flame was blown out by the wind, so make sure to wait until the flames subside before you relight.

Keep your grill away from the home, and if you use propane, make sure your propane tank is less than 12 years old. Never use gasoline to start a fire on a coal grill, and make sure to carefully dispose of any ashes.
